The Reds were stunned 2-1 by Tottenham Hotspur in their opening game of the new Premiership season, but bounced back to rout Stoke City 4-0 on Wednesday night. Star striker Fernando Torres gave Liverpool an early lead, which was doubled by new signing Glen Johnson just before half time. Dutch international Dirk Kuyt and young Frenchman David Ngog added late goals to make the scoreline look even more one sided.

If Martin Skrtel does not recover from his injury and Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos does not arrive at Anfield before Monday, then Benitez will again be forced to play young David Ayala alongside the experienced Jamie Carragher in central defence. Alberto Aquilani, Daniel Agger, Fabio Aurelio and Nabil El Zhar are all unavailable through injury.

Aston Villa had a bad start to their season too as they lost 2-0 at home to Roberto Martinez's Wigan side. Things went from bad to worse for the Midlands outfit as they were upset 1-0 by Rapid Vienna in the first leg of their Europa League playoff round tie on Thursday night.

Stewart Downing and Wilfred Bouma continue to be absent through injury, while defender Luke Young is on compassionate leave following the death of his half brother Andre. Curtis Davies suffered a recurrence of his shoulder injury against Rapid, and Martin O'Neill will be hoping that he will recover in time for this crucial fixture.
