The Cottagers had secured a narrow 1-0 win over the Gunners in this fixture last season with Brede Hangeland scoring the only goal of the match midway through the first half. While the Gunners' title challenge has taken a severe blow following two straight defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City, Wenger will be aware that a good run of form could put them right back in contention of winning the league title for the first time in more than five years.
Defender Thomas Vermaelen scored a brace with Emmanuel Eboue and Cesc Fabregas as Arsenal ran rampant, dominating almost two thirds of the possession against a weak Wigan side. Keeper Manuel Almunia should return back to full fitness after recovering from a virus infection while Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott are expected to play some part after spending some time on the sidelines with injuries.
